Around the SEC: Week 9

Story posted October 29, 2021 in CommRadio, Sports by Dylan Price

The SEC continues to produce some of the best action in college football, with five teams in the top 15 currently.

Let’s take a look at all the action around the conference

No.3 Alabama Wins in Dominant Fashion

Heading into the fourth quarter, some were putting the Crimson Tide on upset watch as only a touchdown separated them from the Volunteers.

Then, Nick Saban’s squad put their foot on the gas.

In the fourth quarter, quarterback Bryce Young started it off with a score, before the Volunteers answered back with a 70-yard touchdown pass.

Then, Brian Robinson Jr. rushed for back-to-back scores and Young passed for one, leading the Tide to a 21-0 run and another win.

Robinson Jr. finished the day with 107 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Young finished with 371 yards, two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns.

Alabama took care of business and now they head into a bye week.

No.9 Ole Miss Bury Their Demons

Since 2015, the Rebels have struggled to beat the Tigers.

This week though, they buried their demons with a 31-17 win.

Quarterback Matt Corral went for 185 yards and a passing touchdown, adding another on the ground.

The team combined for over 250 yards with Snoop Conner and Jerrion Ealy rushing for 114 yards and 97 yards respectively.

The Rebel defense came alive as well forcing LSU to commit three turnovers and forcing four fumbles. Chance Campbell, Sam Williams and Cedric Johnson all added a sack and a forced fumble, and the defense combined to keep the Tigers offense at bay for the most part.

The Rebels got lucky though, as they tried to shoot themselves in the foot a few times.

The team committed 12 penalties for 106 yards which assuredly did not make Lane Kiffin a happy man. Moving forward if the Rebels want to continue their strong run, that cannot continue.

Especially against tougher competition like they’ll face next week in Auburn.

LSU Loses as Coaching Rumors Swirl

When one team wins, well naturally, another team loses. LSU now sits at 4-4 and is in disarray.

With Coach Ed Orgeron and the program parting ways, the talk in Louisiana right now is centered around the future of the program, and more specifically who will be leading it.

Penn State head coach James Franklin, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker have all received questions from the press about the LSU opening.

Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher has been pestered by reporters about the job since news of the firing broke, and LSU will look to swing big to fill their opening.

AD Scott Woodard has done just that at every program to this point, and with ample resources to do it again, it’s foreseeable.

For now, the Tigers will finish out their season and wait to strike, but until then rumors will continue to plague the team as the world wonders which big-name coach will fill the void as the ship’s captain.

Game of the Week: No.9 Ole Miss vs No.18 Auburn

This week, Ole Miss travels to Auburn for a massive primetime game. Both teams need the win to stay remotely close to the playoff conversation and to ensure they remain in the New Year's Six contention.
