Fantasy Football Trust or Bust: Week 6

Audio/Story posted October 11, 2019 in CommRadio, Sports by Matt Noah

Host Matt Noah, Zech Lambert, Ben Mooney and Andres Madden recap Week 5 in the NFL and look forward to Week 6 from a fantasy football standpoint, hoping to help shape up your lineup for next Sunday:

Week 5 was a week for many fantasy football players to get back on track. It was the first time this season that five players scored more than 40 points in PPR leagues in the same week. Some fantasy teams posted astronomical scores, while others had players like Mike Evans and Keenan Allen who failed to produce. Let’s preview the best and worst for Week 6 from a fantasy lens.

Quarterbacks

Deshaun Watson, Texans

The highest scoring QB of Week 5, Watson threw for 426 yards, five touchdown passes and zero picks during Sunday's 53-32 win against the Falcons. He filled up the stat sheet and had his best game of the year. With 41 points, Watson has moved up to become the second-best fantasy quarterback of the year. His upcoming matchup against Kansas City is on Sunday Night Football. With an over/under of 55.5 points, Watson will have the opportunity to put up another big game.

Decision: TRUST

Carson Wentz, Eagles

Wentz passed for 189 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-6 victory over New York. Totaling only 11 points, it was his worst performance of the year despite playing the lowly Jets. With Wentz facing a much stronger matchup in Week 6 as the Eagles travel to Minnesota, expectations must be kept in check; he is a risky play. His only benefit here might be that he gets to throw the ball more, as the Eagles’ game plan against the Jets was to run the ball. Overall, most fantasy teams do not have a better quarterback, but regardless, he is a low-end QB1.

Decision: BUST

Running Backs

Aaron Jones, Packers

Jones led his Packers to victory in Week 5 by carrying the ball 19 times for 107 yards and four touchdowns, also hauling in seven of eight targets for 75 yards. The Packers beat the Cowboys 34-24, and the star RB was first in PPR scoring with 48 points. Jones has been awesome this season with Aaron Rodgers taking a step back, allowing the rushing attack to flourish. The second-year starter set a career high in total yards and touchdowns last week. Although negative regression is due in Week 6, Jones faces a vulnerable Lions defense. He could feast again.

Decision: TRUST

Melvin Gordon, Chargers

In his season debut following his holdout, Gordon carried the ball 12 times for 31 yards and caught four of six targets for 7 yards. He finished with 7 PPR points during Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Broncos. Gordon failed to take advantage of the Denver run defense, but, in similar fashion to Ezekiel Elliot, it may take a few weeks for Gordon to be able to handle an NFL workload, especially with such a productive handcuff in backup running back Austin Ekeler. Gordon getting 16 touches was the first step, and it is his backfield. We’ll see what Gordon will be able to handle next Sunday at home against the Steelers. Wait one more week before starting Gordon.

Decision: BUST

Wide Receivers

DJ Chark Jr., Jaguars

Chark reeled in eight catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns in Week 5 against the Panthers. Scoring 36 points in PPR, Chark has shown to be a valuable fantasy asset. Originally going undrafted in most leagues, Chark is now the fifth-best wide receiver this year according to total fantasy points. Since Nick Foles got injured in Week 1, Chark has emerged as the top receiver for Gardner Minshew. Next week, he is a must-start, high-end WR2 as he will look to cash in another big performance against the Saints.

Decision: TRUST

Marquise Browns, Ravens

“Hollywood” Brown caught only three passes for 22 yards in Week 5 but salvaged his day with a touchdown in the Baltimore win over the Steelers. Since Week 1, Brown’s fantasy score has regressed, but his Week 5 touchdown, his first since the Week 1, shows promise. His quarterback, Lamar Jackson, has also cooled down since his red-hot start. As a rookie, it is expected for Brown to continue to get better as the season continues. He is a decent flex start with big play potential. Facing a winless Bengals team in Week 6, he has as good a chance as ever for a breakout performance.

Decision: TRUST
