Heisman Watch: Week 12

Story posted November 21, 2020 in CommRadio, Sports by Adam Sheetz

Kyle Trask, Quarterback, Florida

Kyle Trask has had some amazing performances this season, but none of them compare to his most recent performance.

Against Arkansas, Trask passed for 356 yards and six touchdowns while completing 79.3% of his passes. He also finished the game with a 97.6 QBR and 250.7 passer rating.

Trask leads all of college football with 28 passing touchdowns and has only three interceptions.

Trask has Florida as the best team in the SEC East and has the Gators ready to make a run for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Kyle Trask is the frontrunner for the Heisman right now, and will remain the favorite if he can continue to play at this level throughout the remainder of the season.

Justin Fields, Quarterback, Ohio State

Due to the late Big Ten start, Justin Fields will play fewer games than anyone else in the Heisman race, but his numbers keep him in this race.

In three games, Fields has 11 passing touchdowns and no interceptions. He also leads all of college football in QBR with a rating of 96.4 on the 2020 season.

Fieldsis completing 86.7% of his passes and has been the most accurate passer in college football.

Justin Fields is at a disadvantage with playing fewer games, but his play has been unbelievable and has the Buckeyes ranked as one of the best teams in college football.

Mac Jones, Quarterback, Alabama

Mac Jones had a lot of pressure coming into the season, trying to replace Tua Tagovailoa as the quarterback of Alabama, and he has played phenomenal.

Jones ranks second in the nation in QBR with a 95.6 rating and has been extremely efficient this year. Jones has 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions, and ranks eighth in the country in passing yards with 2,196 yards. These numbers are added onto the fact that Jones has

Alabama ranked No. 1 in the country and considered the best team in the nation by most polls.

The Heisman trophy has a history of going to the best player on the best team, and if that is the case in 2020, then Mac Jones will be the guy taking home the award come season’s end.

Zach Wilson, Quarterback, BYU

Zach Wilson has come onto the scene in 2020, and it is time to give him the national attention he has earned this year.

Wilson has been phenomenal in 2020 and the numbers back it up. He ranks fourth in the nation in passing yards with 2,512 yards, ranks tied for fourth in passing touchdowns with 22, and ranks ninth in QBR with an 87.5 rating.

Wilson is also completing 75.1% of his passes and only has two interceptions on the year.

Maybe the most impressive stat on his Heisman resume is that he has BYU 8-0, its best start since 2001, and has the Cougars in the Playoff conversation for the first time since the Playoff started in 2014.

Wilson has been the most improved player in 2020 and has made him a can’t miss candidate for the Heisman trophy this year.

Trevor Lawrence, Quarterback, Clemson

Trevor Lawrence is the best player in college football and considered the undisputed number one pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. He is also a strong candidate to win the Heisman trophy this season.

Lawrence lost two games this year after he tested positive for Covid-19, but his play before his positive test was unbelievable. Lawrence has 1,833 passing yards, 71 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns.

Lawrence also has some big games coming up as Clemson needs to win out to make the College Football Playoff, which means Lawrnece will have the opportunity to have some great performances.

Lawrence did miss two games which hurt his case for the Heisman, but he remains in the race because of his tremendous play and having the chance to play in some huge games to improve his chances of winning a championship and the Heisman.
