Heisman Watch: Week 14

Story posted December 4, 2020 in CommRadio, Sports by Adam Sheetz

Mac Jones, Quarterback, Alabama

Mac Jones has been unbelievable for the Tide this year, and his stellar play continued against Auburn. In the Iron Bowl, Jones threw for 302 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Jones finished the game with a 96.4 QBR and a 230.3 passer rating in the Tide’s 42-13 win.
Jones sits at sixth in the nation in passing yards, seventh in passing touchdowns, and leads the nation in QBR. Jones has been unbelievable and has the Tide ranked as the top team in the nation.

The Tide are rolling, and Mac Jones is leading the charge for a team that has championship aspirations in 2020.

Kyle Trask, Quarterback, Florida

Kyle Trask has been unbelievable in 2020 and has the Gators in great position in the SEC East. Trask stats are unbelievable in 2020.

Trask has 2,810 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns and an average QBR of 93.4. Trask has also had a few “Heisman moments” this season, including throwing for a phenomenal 474 passing yards and four touchdowns in the Gators huge win over rival Georgia.

Trask also has two six touchdown games this season, one being the season opener against Ole Miss and the other against Arkansas later in the year. Trask’s numbers speak for themselves, and sit him right with Mac Jones at the top of the Heisman race.

Trevor Lawrence, Quarterback, Clemson
Trevor Lawrence has been an extremely tough candidate to judge this season. Lawrence looked like the front runner for the award in October, but then tested positive for Covid-19 and was forced to miss two games, including Clemson’s only loss to Notre Dame.

Lawrence returned to the field this past weekend against Pitt and was unbelievable. Lawrence threw for 403 yards and two touchdowns in the Tigers 52-17 win over the Panthers.

Even with the two missed games, and a third game that was cancelled due to COVID-19, Lawrence still has a strong case for the award.

Lawrence has 2,236 passing yards and 19 touchdowns in his junior season. Lawrence missed some action this year due to the virus, but he still is firmly in the Heisman race as the season winds down.

Zach Wilson, Quarterback, BYU

Zach Wilson has been stellar in 2020. Wilson has BYU undefeated and firmly in the race for a New Year’s Six Bowl game in 2020. Wilson’s stats are also extremely impressive.

Wilson has 2,724 passing yards and 26 touchdowns in his junior season. Wilson only has two interceptions and has an average QBR of 88.3. Due to the pandemic, BYU's schedule has been uncertain at times this year and they have played a weak schedule as a result.

However, the Cougars recently added a game against Coastal Carolina that will be played this Saturday. This game will be the Cougars toughest test of the season, and could help Wilson in the race with a win on the Cougars road trip to Coastal.

Wilson has dominated his competition and his play keeps him firmly in the Heisman race as the season enters its final weeks.

Jaret Patterson, Running Back, Buffalo

Jaret Patterson has only played in four games in 2020, as the MAC started late due to the pandemic. In those four games, the Buffalo running back has been unbelievable.

Patterson had a performance for the record books last Saturday in Buffalo’s 70-41 win over Kent State. Patterson rushed for 409 yards and eight touchdowns in the win.

The eight rushing touchdowns tied the NCAA record for most ever in a single game. Patterson also has a 301 rushing yard game in the Bulls win over Bowling Green on Nov. 17.

Patterson has 920 rushing yards, 209 receiving yards and 17 total touchdowns in 2020. Patterson is suffering from the limited schedule for the MAC in 2020, but he is still playing at an extremely high level, putting his name right into the Heisman race this season.
