Penn State football set to take Minnesota in annual White Out game

The season may not begin until September, but many Penn State fans are excited for the upcoming campaign after the home game theme schedule was released on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions are set to square off against Minnesota on Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the annual White Out game.

In addition, the contest is also Homecoming, and the blue and white will don its “Generations of Greatness” uniforms.

Minnesota is a surprise choice to be the White Out as Michigan and Ohio State have typically been the teams chosen for the game. The affair against Ohio State will be the annual Stripe Out game.

Last campaign, Penn State hosted its White Out against Auburn and came away with a 28-20 victory over the Tigers.

This now marks the second consecutive season that the Nittany Lions won’t take on Michigan or Ohio State in the White Out game.

Before these two years, the last time the blue and white Nittany Lions didn’t face either the Wolverines or Buckeyes in the game was 2011, when Alabama beat Penn State 27-11.

Selecting the Golden Gophers instead of one of the best teams in the nation in the Buckeyes may have something to do with Fox Sports controlling the rights to the game.

The network is known for its Big Ten noon kickoff games, and the White Out is usually played at night.

The Nittany Lions have never played against Minnesota in the White Out, and since its establishment in 2004, they hold a 9-8 record.

Penn State also announced game themes for the rest of its 2022 home slate.

The “107K Family Reunion” is against Ohio University at noon on Sept. 10; the annual THON game against Central Michigan is on Sept. 24; the “All U-Day” against Northwestern is on Oct 1; Military Appreciation Day against Maryland is on Nov. 12; and Senior Day against Michigan State is on Nov 26.

The Nittany Lions begin their season on the road with a prime-time matchup against Purdue at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept 1.
