UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -The Penn State Nittany Lions took a loss against the Vermont Catamounts 16-10 on Wednesday afternoon at Panzer Stadium after being outshot 67-31.

Vermont took advantage of the shots early, controlling the ball for much of the first quarter. The Catamounts recorded 16 shots before the Nittany Lions were able to record their first.

With shots came scoring, and Liam Limoges got the scoring going for Vermont, recording two of the first three Catamount goals. Limoges would wind up leading all scorers with five goals on the day.

The Nittany Lions fell behind by three goals before Will Peden got the Nittany Lions on the board, but Vermont would not lay off the offense, posting a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Penn State’s head coach Jeff Tambroni believes that his team needs to find ways to play better early on in games.

“Defensively we probably just got to do a little bit better job of tightening up earlier in games,” Tambroni said. “We could do a better job in the first half at giving ourselves a little bit of momentum.”

Limoges' third goal of the contest got the scoring started in the second quarter, but Penn State was able to recover with Dan Reaume scoring his second of the game and Jack Traynor also putting one to the back of the net. Traynor’s goal cut the Catamounts lead to two.

Vermont was able to get a contribution when Jonas Hunter scored his first goal of the season right before halftime. That goal put Vermont up 9-5 going to the break with Vermont leading the shot category 38-16.

Chris Feifs’ team came out firing to begin the second half, scoring two goals within the first minute of action. Limoge and David Closterman scored just seven seconds apart to put Vermont up by six.

But Penn State would not quit, scoring four unanswered goals to cut the lead to 11-9 in the third quarter. Reaume scored his third goal of the contest and it was Mark Sickler’s goal that led to a timeout by Vermont.

Tambroni alluded to this run after the game. “As the game went on, both against Viillanova and here today, our guys showed flashes, like four or five minute flashes,” Tambroni said.

That flash of momentum shifted back to Vermont following the timeout as Brock Haley got it going with a goal for Vermont. The Catamounts ended the third quarter more than doubling the Nittany Lions' shots 51-25 and led by a score of 13-9.

Vermont did not let up in the fourth quarter as Limoge, Charlie Pope and Thomas McConvey each recorded a goal. Their shooting did not slow down either, as they held a 16-5 advantage in the shot department.

Dan Reaume recorded the only Penn State goal in the fourth quarter when he scored his fourth of the game with 1:33 remaining.

Reaume believes that his team has to find their identity. “We just got to stick true to who we are, you know a blue-collar team, and we got to get back to work tomorrow for a tough St. Joe’s opponent this Saturday,” Reaume said.

The Nittany Lions will look to stop their losing streak at two when they face off with St. Joseph's on the road on Saturday.
