Player Spotlight: Bucknell G Cameron Ayers
The Bucknell Bison benefited last year from having a star on their roster in Mike Muscala. Muscala is no longer with the program, so they are looking for a player to take on the scoring and leadership roles.
Cameron Ayers is a senior guard who has been seeing significant playing time since his freshman year and will look to increase his level of play, in a year where high expectations will be placed on his shoulders. He is the leading returning scorer from last season. Ayers can play both the point and off the ball.
Ayers saw the floor a lot his freshman year as the team’s sixth man, averaging 22.9 minutes per game while putting up 7.5 points per game. He was named to the Patriot League’s All-Rookie team.
In his sophomore season, Ayers joined the starting lineup and took home second-team All Patriot League honors. He averaged 11.1 points per game.
Ayers was second on the team in scoring behind Muscala last year with 12.4 points per game. He was named first team All Patriot League and was a part of his second Patriot League champion team. He scored 17 points in the second half of their semifinal game to push the Bison past Army. Ayers was especially impressive with his ball control, totaling only 33 turnovers in 34 games.
Ayers enters this season with high expectations, as he was named to the Lou Henson Preseason All-American Team, an honor given to the best Division One mid-major players. He started the year with 11 points in 35 minutes, in a four-point loss at Stanford.
The Bison will take on Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center Wednesday night.
