SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament Preview

Story posted March 10, 2021 in Sports, CommRadio by Logan Bourandas

Although not one of the deeper conferences in the country, the SEC still features two top-10 teams as well as many mid-tier teams looking to add a major boost to their resume.

Starting off the SEC tournament will be a battle between the bottom two teams in the conference between Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. It isn’t a high profile matchup as the Commodores only have three conference wins to their name. The team's biggest win of the year came against Ole Miss who ranks sixth in the conference.

As for the Aggies, they only played 10 total conference games due to a long COVID-19 pause which cancelled both matchups against Vanderbilt. They only have two conference wins to their name.

The winner of that matchup would play Florida in the second round. That second round will feature four matchups with three that are already set.

The eight and nine seeds will face off when Kentucky takes on Mississippi State.

Both teams are coming into the matchup hot as the Bulldogs have won three of their last five. They also lost to one seeded Alabama by only five points in a close matchup. The Wildcats have won four of their last six, including a dominant 15-point win over fourth seeded Tennessee.

These two teams played each other once this year which ended in a double overtime win for Kentucky. The winner of this matchup will take on top seeded Alabama, a team neither squad was able to beat this season.

After that game, the tenth seed Georgia Bulldogs will take on the seven seed Missouri Tigers.

The Bulldogs come into the tournament on a two game losing streak, including a ten point loss against Alabama. The streak pushed the team down in the standings as they could’ve been as high as the seven seed for this tournament. However, before that losing streak, they did pull off an upset over third seeded LSU.

The Tigers are coming off a loss against that same LSU team, but they won a close battle against Florida just three days before. These two teams played each other once this year, a game that ended in a ten point Georgia victory when the Tigers were ranked No. 20 in the country. The winner of this game takes on second seeded Arkansas.

The final game in the second round sees the eleventh seed South Carolina Gamecocks take on six seeded Ole Miss Rebels.

It’s been a rough road as of late for the Gamecocks as they hit a slump late season only winning one of their last nine games. The one win was a 21 point victory over Georgia.

The Rebels however found themselves on a two game winning streak, but before that were upset by bottom seeded Vanderbilt. When these two teams last met up it was a seven point Ole Miss road win. The winner of the game takes on third seeded LSU.

Those are all the known matchups in the SEC tournament. It should be a fun one to see who will be the first SEC champion since Auburn back in 2019.
