Tagliaferri’s Strike Propels Penn State to a Win
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A top-25 matchup resulted in Penn State taking down Indiana after coming back from being down 1-0. The Lions are rolling after winning three straight.
The game started off hot for Indiana, as it had three shots in the first nine minutes of the game. Chances were created but ultimately the half ended 0-0.
Penn State led the half in shots four to three, but Indiana proved to be a more physical team, as the Hoosiers had seven fouls to Penn State’s two in the half.
Payton Linnehan had the Nittany Lion’s first shot on goal, but Frankie Tagliaferri’s blast that rang off the crossbar was Penn State’s best chance of the half coming in the thirty-third minute.
Going into the half, both Indiana and Penn State each had one shot on goal but the game would open up at the beginning of the second half.
The half started off hot, as in the forty-seventh minute Angela Aguero had the first shot on goal. Then six minutes later in the fifty-third minute, Indiana took the lead thanks to a goal scored by Hanna Nemeth.
One minute later, Frankie Tagliaferri fired a bullet into the net that tied up the game at one a piece. Since tying up the score, the Lions controlled the dynamic of the game and in the sixtieth minute, Cori Dyke nearly put them up over the Hoosiers.
One minute later, Sam Coffey gave the Lions the 2-1 lead thanks to an assist from Ally Schlegel.
Since going down 2-1, Indiana responded by putting pressure on the Nittany Lions defense. A flurry of saves by Kat Asman in the final twenty-five minutes of the game ultimately saved this game from becoming a draw.
In the eighty-seventh minute, Asman had a diving save to keep the ball from going into the lines net.
As Penn State dominated shots in the first half of the game, Indiana added 12 shots in the second half over Penn State's eight. Indiana also added three corner kicks In the second half, all in which came in the final twenty-five minutes.
Penn State ultimately came out on top of the win and their third in a row since losing to Rutgers in the first game of the season. A great team performance is rewarded with a win.
Penn State's next game will be March 7 versus Michigan State.
