Around the Big 12: Week 11
The 2022 college football regular season is coming to a close in two weeks as teams fight for their chances to get into bowl games and playoffs.
Let’s see how the Big 12 looks after Week 11:
No. 4 TCU 17, No. 18 Texas 10
Texas put up a defensive stand in the first half, holding TCU to just three points and forcing one turnover.
TCU then turned it on after a 75-yard run from Kendre Miller, and that momentum would carry into its drive that ended in a 31-yard touchdown pass from Max Duggan to Quentin Johnston.
The Horned Frogs couldn’t get their run or pass protection figured out all of the first half, but once they did Miller was able to carry this offense for 138 yards and a touchdown. Texas needs to find a run game sometime soon, as the Longhorns ran the ball 22 times and only got 28 yards out of it.
TCU continues its undefeated season next week against Baylor as they try to stay in the college football playoff race. Texas falls to 6-4 on the season and faces Kansas on Saturday.
No. 19 Kansas State 31, Baylor 3
Kansas State put together a dominant win as the Wildcats held Baylor to just three points and got two turnovers. Will Howard had a career day throwing for 196 yards and three touchdowns.
Baylors’ turnovers were the main factor of this one as both came at the end of drives that the Bears were in a position to score. Baylor also didn’t convert any of the three fourth down attempts that it had.
Kansas State improves to 7-3 on the season as the Wildcats will take on West Virginia on Saturday. Baylor falls to 6-4 and has a tough matchup next week against No. 4 TCU.
West Virginia 23, Oklahoma 20
Eric Gray put up another career day for the Oklahoma Sooners rushing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. However, it wouldn’t be enough for the Sooners after they missed a field goal to take the lead late.
West Virginia then marched down the field and won the game.
Oklahoma falls short yet again in its long season as they are now 5-5 and need one more win to become bowl-eligible. The Sooners can get that win next week against Oklahoma State while West Virginia inches closer to six wins, but the Mountaineers need to face the No. 23 Kansas State on Saturday.
Oklahoma State 20, Iowa State 14
Oklahoma State got the win over Iowa State after a failed fourth down attempt at the end of the game. Iowa State led 14-10 heading into the fourth quarter but gave up 10 unanswered points to Oklahoma State.
Both teams couldn’t get anything going on offense, as Iowa State was held to 59 rushing yards and turned the ball over five times. Oklahoma wasn’t much better as the Sooners only rushed for 57 yards and turned the ball over twice while going 1-for-14 on third down.
Oklahoma State jumps back into the rankings as the Cowboys are now No. 22 in the country and will face their state rivals in Oklahoma, the Sooners next weekend. Iowa State falls to 4-6 on the season and needs to win out to become bowl eligible.
Texas Tech 43, Kansas 28
Texas Tech won a shootout against Kansas, rushing with a committee of running backs for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Jason Bean played outstanding and put his team in a position to win after throwing for 270 yards, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for one.
Bean left the game late in the fourth quarter after taking a sack making way for freshman quarterback Ethan Vasko who couldn’t get anything going against the Texas Tech defense.
Texas Tech needs to win one of its next two games if the Red Raiders want to make it to a bowl game and that can happen on Saturday against Iowa State.
Kansas falls to 6-4 on the season and will host No.18 Texas on Saturday for its senior day.
