Blowouts and Tight Games Headlined Week Nine

Story posted April 19, 2023 in CommRadio, Sports by Hayden Lewis

Starting with the man in our cover photo, Jordan Hyde and the Utah Utes have been next-level good for the past few weeks. This weekend they showed how powerful they were on offense against Lindenwood and Mercer.

Hyde between the two games had 11 goals and three assists for a total of 14 points. He has been on fire all year for Utah and has 40 goals on the season. His contributions led to a 10-3 win over Lindenwood and a 22-12 victory over Mercer.

The UMass Minutemen got back into the win column this past weekend against St. Bonaventure. The Minutemen defeated the Bonnies 14-3 on home turf and will hit the road to Saint Joseph’s Saturday.

Caleb Hammett, the TikTok star and UMass fogo, scored his first career goal after a couple of years of trying.

A couple of teams can be considered as back in my eyes. I wrote them both off earlier this year, and this is my chance to repent for my actions and say I was wrong. I am the problem.

I’ll start with the Orange from Syracuse. Joey Spallina and the young lads in upstate New York are on fire. Syracuse took down North Carolina over the weekend with a 15-14 victory in thrilling fashion.

Spallina had a pair of goals and assists, while Cole Kirst had a trio of goals and a singular apple. Another standout for the Orange was Owen Hiltz, who contributed a goal and three assists.

The other team that I will deem officially back is Georgetown. The Hoyas were 0-3 in February and looked like they would be having a long season. Kevin Warne’s squad turned everything around and is now 8-3 and has not lost since the end of February.

Tucker Dordevic has finally found himself after a few rocky games at the beginning of the season. Dordevic now has 38 goals and six assists, proving he is one of the top players in the nation.

The Hoyas also have Will Bowen on the backend. He has caused 22 turnovers and has been a menace all season. Bowen may go first overall in the PLL Draft this year, so he’s a guy to keep your eyes pinned on if you watch Georgetown.

In another close contest this weekend, Penn State took on Michigan in a thriller. The Wolverines led for the majority of the game because they were able to shut down TJ Malone, the top Nittany Lion.

However, when the team needed him the most, Jack Traynor caught fire, netting six goals in the contest. The Cardiac Cats have caught fire again and are looking to capture a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tourney with a win over Rutgers.

It was not a super crazy weekend in terms of things that happened and the outcomes of the games. I expect this weekend to be crazy because many games will decide what happens in conference tournaments.
