College Football: Week 6 Recap

Story posted October 14, 2022 in CommRadio, Sports by Aidan Torok

It is officially the halfway point of the college football season. The usual suspects sit at the top of the standings, but every team has looked susceptible. With a few marquee matchups coming up, the contenders will separate themselves from the pretenders.

Week six of the college football season was the week of the nearly upsets. Notably Alabama was in a battle against Texas A&M, but was able to survive thanks to a last second defensive stand.

Week 6 wasn’t too kind for Utah, Kansas, Kentucky and other Top 25 teams. However, the top echelon of teams were all able to survive.

Oklahoma vs. Texas

The Red River Showdown is always one of the biggest games of the season. However, it seemed like only one tem showed up to play.

Texas, with Quinn Ewers back at the helm, ran Oklahoma out of the building. The Longhorns put up a 49 spot without the Sooners even scoring a point.

Ewers showed why he was one of the top quarterback recruits in the country, tossing for four touchdowns. While the Brent Venerables era has gotten off to a rocky start, the Sooners have a  lot of dark days ahead.

Despite the two losses, Texas is seriously alive for the college football playoff. This team went toe to toe with Alabama in Week 2 and their second loss came when Ewers was out.

Texas finally might be back. This is the season Longhorns fans have been waiting for. Steve Sarkisian in year two has completely turned this program around and the attitude surrounding this team has changed.

Texas A&M vs. Alabama

This game lost some of its juice that it had last year, but Jimbo Fisher nearly knocked off the Tide for the second year in a row.

Coming into the season, all the talk was about Nick Saban versus Jimbo Fisher. The two former friends went head to head in the offseason arguing about the NIL. However, Texas A&M hasn’t lived up to the hype and this game lost some of its excitement.

The Aggies have been disappointing this season with losses to Appalachian State and Arkansas. However, for the second straight year Fisher was able to get his team up and they went toe to toe with Alabama.

The Tide were without their former Hesiman winning quarterback, Bryce Young, and his absence did have a big impact on the game. Thanks to a questionable goal line play call from Fisher, Alabama got bailed out and was able to continue their perfect season.

TCU vs. Kansas

Saturday was one of the biggest games in program history for Kansas, and the Jayhawks came up just short, falling to TCU 38-31.

The turning point in the game was the injury to star quarterback Jalon Daniels. Jason Bean  did a great job stepping up and kept Kansas in the game, but the Jayhawks offense couldn’t keep up with TCU and Max Duggan.

While the loss is disappointing, it is clear Lance Leipold has built something special in Kansas. The Jayhawks are finally relevant again.
