Hobey Baker Watch: Week 15

Story posted February 1, 2023 in CommRadio, Sports by Anthony Desher

There are only a few weeks left of the 2022-23 season. With playoffs on the doorstep, players will be stepping up to put their team over the top. Who has impressed this week?

Adam Fantilli, Forward, Michigan

Fantilli is coming off another impressive weekend where he totaled seven points against Penn State. He now has 40 points on the year in just 22 games played, also leading the NCAA with 1.82 points per game.

It makes sense that the 18-year-old is the projected second-overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft. No one celebrates scoring an empty-net goal like he does.

Ryan McAllister, Forward, Western Michigan

McAllister also has 40 points on the year through 28 games. Setting up Jason Polin can be a fun job sometimes. McAllister leads the NCAA with 29 assists and led the league in points for most of the year.

With Fantilli and McAllister tied in points, is it possible to split the Hobey Baker Award in half and let them share it?

Jason Polin, Forward, Western Michigan

23 goals in 28 games is an impressive stat. Getting set up by Ryan McAllister can be a fun job sometimes. Those 23 goals lead the NCAA and hat tricks come easy as Polin can net them in his sleep.
Scoring a lot of goals is fun for the whole team, but will it be enough for the award?

Jimmy Snuggerud, Forward, Minnesota

If you are a St. Louis Blues fan, being excited for this guy is an understatement. If you’re a goalie, being absolutely terrified when this guy is on the ice is also an understatement. 16 goals and 21 points make the scoresheet his home away from home.

With a mesmerizing shot, Snuggerud will be in the NHL goalies’ nightmares very soon.

Logan Cooley, Forward, Minnesota

Cooley knows how to keep his cool on the ice, which is why he is sitting at 36 points on the season. He skates through defenses like they’re butter and he’s got the puck on a string all the time.

Arizona’s rebuild looks better every game Cooley plays and seeing him on a line with Clayton Keller will be fun to watch.

Jakub Dobes, Goaltender, Ohio State

Dobes is having a great year between the pipes for the Buckeyes.

Early on, Ohio State was inconsistent, but now that the team has found its footing, Dobes has been a wall. A .921 save percentage and  2.18 goals against have been exactly what was expected from him all year long.

The Big Ten Conference is in a tight race for positioning, and if Dobes can continues to stand tall in the net, Ohio State could be a heavy favorite for the Big Ten title.
