UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State’ Society of Bassists is holding their first annual bass day this Saturday.

The daylong event includes activities such as mock auditions, masterclasses, instrument exhibits and more. It is open to bass players of all skill levels.

Executive Director, Dr. Patriacia Weitzel said considering how small the number of bassists tends to be a great opportunity for them to network with each other.

“I felt like it would be important to have an event like this at Penn State to have people come together and celebrate the beauty of the instrument,” Weitzel said.

She said it was also a great way for people who may be intimidated by the instrument to get comfortable.

“People usually shy away from the bass, but once you start playing the bass, you notice it’s such a versatile instrument,” Weitzel said.

President of the Society of Bassists at Penn State, Ben Byham (fourth-year, music education and performance major on the double bass) looks forward to connecting with attendees, which includes players and professionals from out of the state and abroad.

Also in attendance will be award-winning bass player Edward Perez from New York and Canadian bass player Joel Quarrington.

Byham looks forward to the event being an enriching experience for all who attend as well as the comradery playing with fellow bass players in an ensemble that will conclude the night.

Bass day is free to all who attend and more information can be found on the event’s website.
