Penn State Hires Mike Gambino as New Baseball Coach

Mike Gambino was hired as the new Penn State baseball coach, the school announced Monday morning.

Gambino replaces Rob Cooper, who left the program after 10 seasons with the Nittany Lions.

Gambino has spent the last 13 years with Boston College, where he ranks second all-time in programs wins with 291 and led the Eagles to two NCAA Regional appearances, including a Super Regional appearance in 2016.

He has five seasons with 25 or more wins and led Boston College to the ACC Tournament four times.

He has also developed 33 MLB draft picks in his first 12 seasons with the Eagles, inlcuding three first round picks and six picks in the first five rounds.

This past season, Gambino led the Eagles to a 37-20 record with a 16-14 record in conference play. The 37 wins tied a program record set in 2005 and the 16 ACC wins set a program record.

Boston College had 12 ranked wins in 2023, including a 7-6 victory over No. 2 Tennesse on its way to playing in the Tuscaloosa Regional final.

Gambino's squad was ranked for 12 weeks in the D1 Baseball Poll, ranking as high as No. 9.

in 2016, he was named the 2016 American Baseball Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the year and a finalist for D1 Baseball Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to 35 wins and their first ever NCAA Super Regional.

Gambino played for the Eagles from 1997-2000, batting .313 with eight home runs and 87 RBIs. His 78 hits in 2000 were a program record that stood until 2011 and his 52 runs are top 10 in Boston College history.

He went on to spend two seasons in the Boston Red Sox minor league system before getting hired as a special assistant to the Red Sox's Major League staff.

The Garrison, N.Y., native spent two years as a regional scout for the Detroit Tigers and was an assistant coach at Boston College from 2003-2005.
