Penn State University President Neeli Bendapudi Makes Statement Across Pennsylvania Colleges
HARRISBURG, Pa. - Penn State’s President Neeli Bendapudi spoke at the Pennsylvania Senate Appropriations Committee to advocate for a budget increase Thursday, according to a university press release.
Bendapudi spoke with other "senior leaders" from Lincoln University, University of Pittsburgh and Temple University, according to the press release.
Penn State receives less money per in-state student than other state universities, despite having a larger student population, the release said.
“If you look at the fact that, per student, we have been so desperately underfunded for the last 50 years, that we now have a large structural deficit that puts increasing pressure on tuition,” Bendapudi was quoted in the release.
Approval would increase the general funding by $115.2 million for the 2023-24 school year, according to the press release.
“I understand that it appears that we have a really big requested funding increase, but I would ask you to take a look at the numbers,” Bendapudi was quoted in the release.
The university President added emphasis on how it is all for one common goal - the students.
“As I look at it, we only have two real income sources: support from the state and tuition,” Bendapudi was quoted in the statement.
The university president previously spoke at the Pennsylvania House Appropriations committee.
