UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State signed a top-30 recruiting class for the second straight season. One of those recruits is four-star State College guard Braeden Shrewsberry, who is quite familiar with the Penn State program.

Braeden is the son of Nittany Lions coach Micah Shrewsberry, who was ecstatic to add his son to the Penn State team.

“I’ve watched him work extremely hard to become a good player,” Shrewsberry said. “He earned the opportunity to play basketball at Penn State and in the Big Ten.”

Braeden is a 6-foot-3 guard and continues to grow, entering his senior season at State College Area High School. The attribute that makes Shrewsberry a great target is his shooting ability, which all the coaches on the staff are very impressed with.

Assistant coach Aki Collins described Shrewsberry as an elite shooter with a very quick release, which fits the style the Nittany Lions want to play.

Collins added that Shrewsberry is not only a great shooter but improving in his ability to dribble and attack the rim.

Collins was also very impressed with how much Shrewsberry studied the game and his thirst for knowledge.

“Braeden is a student of the game,” Collins said. “Most coaches' sons benefit from being around the game, and Braeden took it to another level.”

Shrewsberry has also used his connection with the Penn State team to create relationships with the current players on the Penn State team.

“Our guys love him, and he’s on all of our visits,” Collins said. “The Freshmen class that we already have on campus, they loved him when they were being recruited by us and moving forward.”

Shrewsberry’s commitment meant a lot to Micah, who was very impressed by Braeden’s work ethic to get to this moment.

Coach Shrewsberry mentioned how many shots Braeden is able to get up in the Bryce Jordan Center and the amount of work he continues to put in.

“We’ve only been here 18 months maybe, and I do not know if there is anybody that’s taken more shots in the Bryce Jordan Center than him,” Shrewsberry said. “Whether that be in the practice gym or on the main court. He is up there with guys who have played here for four years.”

Braeden’s fit in Happy Valley is heavily reliant on his shooting ability, and his practice has given the staff a lot of trust in his abilities.

Penn State made a school-record 18 threes in its win over Winthrop on Monday, and Braeden Shrewsberry will add more shooting depth to this team next season.

Shrewsberry was very excited to get started with the Nittany Lions and expressed his excitement about the opportunity to play with his new teammates in a statement released by the basketball program.

“The three 2023 commits and five current freshmen fit really well together and will win a lot of games at Penn State,” Shrewsberry said. “We get to do that in the best basketball conference in the country in front of a passionate fan base that is eager for a good basketball program.”

Shrewsberry is joined by fellow four-star recruits Carey Booth and AAU teammate Logan Imes in the 2023 recruiting class.
