Artists That Should Blow Up in 2023

With the power of TikTok, it is way easier for artists to have hit songs. There are so many talented artists in the world, but many have not broken into the mainstream.

Members of our CommRadio arts and entertainment department wrote about some of the artists they think should blow up in 2023.

gigi

In 2021, gigi released her first song, “Sometimes (Backwood).” The song blew up on social media and has garnered over 75 million streams.

In 2022 gigi released four additional all of which are incredible songs, however none of them have over 450,000 streams on Spotify.

Gigi is way better than a one-hit wonder and deserves to be known for her music as a whole. She is a sensational vocalist and her songwriting is top tier.

With her debut EP or album on the way, 2023 seems to be the year she may gain more notability. Recently gigi opened for Coldplay and Noah Cyrus on their respective tours.

Her angelic vocals and addictive harmonies make her the perfect artist to blow up.

The young artist is already signed to Interscope Records, meaning hopefully she will blow up very soon.

Everyone should check out gigi cause her songs are insanely unique and her music is deserving of way more recognition. - Jack Freiser

Joe Downs

Penn State’s very own, Joe Downs, has a voice of an angel. His Penn State debut was when he performed at the 2023 THON Showcase and placed 5th of out 13 performances.

People with talent like Downs need to capitalize on their opportunity. Downs could, and should, take the world by storm in 2023.

Performing live, Downs sang, while playing the piano, “Vienna” and his version was arguably better than Billy Joel’s.

His potential and beautiful voice is unmatched and undeniable, he just needs someone like Simon Cowell or Usher to take him under his wing. Joe Downs could be the next Harry Styles or Conan Gray replacement.

His style could be described as alternative country. Downs music all has a calming vibe, and the music industry needs more of that these days.

Dwn2earth

R&B artist Dwn2earth popped up in the music scene in 2017, dropping a couple of singles up to the release of his EP in 2018.

Since the start of the Atlanta musician’s career he racked up over 320,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, and with the sound that has been trending in the music world it would be no surprise to see those numbers double or break a million in 2023.

Looking further into this year, his rise can be expected to be a result of one of his tracks trending on TikTok, which has been a powerful hub for catapulting the careers of budding musicians.

What would attract the ear of the average TikTok creator/user?

His music carries bass-heavy psychedelic vibes, making his track carry a unique sound suitable for a reminiscent collage.

Also, the combination of his soft voice, powerful bass and soothing arrangement makes his music ideal for decompressing at the end of a long day.

On top of that, he has gained the attention of music industry veterans doing collabs with Logic’s “OCD” and most recently with Ty Dolla $ign on “Don’t Play With Me.”

The artist seems to have taken a hiatus in 2022, but with time comes great music, so that leaves fans with a question.

Will this be the year that he won’t be a secret anymore?

Joe P

Quarantine had a huge impact on music; there was Taylor Swift’s “folklore,” Megan Thee Stallion getting Beyonce the remix of “Savage,” or even comedian Bo Burnham’s grammy winning “Inside.”

But what could become the biggest impact on music could be how the pandemic pushed a kid in a basement in New Jersey to pursue his dream of making music.

Known as Joe P, the artist was able to use social media to grow his fan base. Now with two EPs, “Emily Can’t Sing” and “French Blonde,” Joe P is a phenomenal and unique musician with talent deserving mainstream attention.

From Asbury Park, the same town responsible for aiding Bruce Springsteen’s rise to fame, Joe P is one of the most exciting young musicians in the Garden State.

Joe P is an indie/alternative rock artist whose songs are authentic and dynamic. His best track and biggest hit thus far, “Off My Mind,” is a beautiful song that perfectly captures an abundance of emotions.

A lot of Joe P’s success can be attributed to his following on TikTok; his alternative rock sound and charismatic persona have attracted almost 400,000 followers to his page, where he posts his songs.

He’s entering 2023 with just under one million monthly listeners on Spotify and has the potential to end the year with well over that. - Sophia D’Ovidio
