Mitch Trubisky Signs With the Pittsburgh Steelers

Mitch Trubisky is back to being a starter in the NFL after he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Trubisky is the latest quarterback to be snatched up in a quarterback market that hasn’t seen such a high demand in years. With the retirements of some quarterbacks and all the trades/free agents seen in the league, a lot of teams are still searching for their starter for Week 1 of the 2022-23 season.

The Steelers were one of these teams until recently, and getting off that list is a huge relief for Steelers fans.

Trubisky signed a two-year contract where he will receive a base of $14 million and a max of $27 million.

Pittsburgh was in a tough position going into the offseason in regards to who its next starter would be with the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger.

Mason Rudolph was originally looked at as possibly being the starter, as he was the second-string quarterback for the Steelers and had some experience starting.

The other option for the Steelers was to draft a rookie, a very dangerous move with this draft class. This year has one of the worst quarterback draft classes that has been seen in a while. If the Steelers had drafted a quarterback, they more than likely wouldn’t have been ready to start on Week 1.

Trubisky seems to be a pretty good fit for the Steelers. He has a good bit of experience being the first string from his time in Chicago where he had a pretty decent statline, which included a 64% completion rate for 10,609 yards and 64 touchdowns. This was all before Nick Foles was brought in to replace him at the starting position.

Another reason as to why Trubisky seems like a good fit is the fact that he’s spent a season in Buffalo training alongside Josh Allen.

Allen has emerged as one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the league, and while he may be younger than Trubisky, he still had a lot to teach him.

This year off from being a starter has undoubtedly been one of the main reasons as to why Trubisky has become such a hot commodity in a quarterback deprived market. If Trubisky can take some of the lessons learned from Allen, then he could very well propel that Steelers into the playoffs again and pick up where Ben Rothlisberger left off.

One of the big tasks ahead of the Steelers now is to try to get Trubisky a good receiving core. The Steelers have potentially already lost one target as JuJu Smith-Schuster is now a free agent and is currently being evaluated by multiple teams as a possible option for their offense.

That would more than likely make Chase Claypool the main wide receiver for Pittsburgh, which isn’t going to be enough for Trubisky.

The Steelers have some work ahead of them in order for this trade to pay off, but they saved themselves from a huge headache this offseason and now have a starter for next season. Steelers fans can now breathe a little easier.
