MLB Weekly Recap: April 24

The 2022 MLB season is new, but underway. Plenty happened this week, from trash being thrown at players in New York to legendary hitters reaching amazing milestones. Let’s break it down.

Miggy Reaches 3,000 Hits

Detroit Tigers legendary DH/first baseman Miguel Cabrera became the seventh player in the history of the sport to reach 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. After being infamously intentionally walked against the New York Yankees earlier in the week, Cabrera ripped an opposite-field single into right field against the Colorado Rockies, sending both the crowd and players alike into celebration.

Cabrera is the first Venezuelan-born player and seventh Latino to join the 3,000 hits club, joining the likes of Roberto Clemente, Albert Pujols and Rod Carew. Cabrera, a triple crown and two-time MVP winner, is bound for the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York whenever he decides to retire.

Yankee Fans Throw Trash At Guardians Players

Something that no fan wants to see occurred Saturday at Yankee Stadium. After the Yanks walked off the Cleveland Guardians, fans in the right field seats pelted Cleveland outfielders with cans, bottles, and other debris.

Before the play, though, outfielder Myles Straw climbed the outfield wall to confront one of the fans and tried to call for security. After the play, both Guardians and Yankee players alike ran to the wall to try and stop the fans from throwing debris.

After the game, Straw had some strong words regarding the incident. “Worst fan base on the planet,” said Straw.

Rays Walk-Off Red Sox After Near No-Hitter

The Tampa Bay Rays walked off the Boston Red Sox Saturday after the Rays combined to pitch nine hitless innings. Red Sox first baseman Bobby Dalbec hit a triple, scoring a run which ended the no-hitter from pitcher Matt Wisler.

Hansel Robles then came in for the Red Sox in extra innings and struck out the first two batters. With Randy Arozarena on base as the automatic runner, Kevin Kiermaier mashed a walk-off homerun to lift the Rays past the Red Sox and get revenge for breaking up the no-hit bid.

NL West Looks Tough… Again

The NL West, as expected, is shaping up to be one of the best, if not the best, division in all of baseball. The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently in first place with a 10-4 record, while the San Francisco Giants are just behind them with a 10-5 record. The third-place team is *surprise* the Colorado Rockies, with a 9-5 record.

What about the San Diego Padres? Well, the Padres are in fourth place with a 10-6 record. The Padres are a little banged up, with both Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger in the 10-Day Injured List. Snell could return by the end of April, while Clevinger should return soon after. Meanwhile, Fernando Tatís, Jr. is still sidelined with a fractured wrist.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are unsurprisingly in last place, though. It is a competitive division, and at this point, either of the top four teams could end up in first place.
