Penn State to Hire Micah Shrewsberry as Next Head Basketball Coach
The Penn State Nittany Lions are expected to hire Purdue assistant Micah Shrewsberry as their new head coach, first reported by Jeff Goodman of Stadium.
Goodman said an official announcement is expected Monday afternoon as Shrewsberry will become full-time head coach after Pat Chambers’s resignation in October.
Chambers was replaced by assistant Jim Ferry in an interim role, who finished the season 11-14 but was reportedly not a finalist for a permanent hire.
Indianapolis native Shrewsberry spent three seasons from 2008-11 as an assistant at Butler under Brad Stevens when the Bulldogs made back-to-back national championship games. He then joined Matt Painter at Purdue for two years before reuniting with Stevens in 2013 for six seasons with the Boston Celtics.
The assistant coach helped Boston reach the Eastern Conference finals in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons before returning to the Boilermakers in 2019 for two seasons.
Barbour kept her promise when she stated in late January that a new coach would be named “immediately following the conclusion of our Penn State men's basketball season,” as Ferry’s Nittany Lions were not invited to the NIT after the bracket was announced Sunday night.
