Penn State men’s basketball and head coach Mike Rhoades have secured a commitment from combo guard Jahvin Carter. He announced Tuesday night.

Carter’s commitment marks the first in the class of 2024 and the second overall non-transfer recruit in the Mike Rhoades era.

The Nittany Lions have had a lot to celebrate recently, with Seth Lundy and Jalen Pickett being drafted to the NBA and Andrew Funk signing an NBA Summer League deal.

Now, they celebrate the beginning of their 2024 recruiting class with the commitment of Carter.

The 6-foot-2-inch guard also held offers from Georgia Tech and Middle Tennessee State but ultimately chose Penn State.

It didn’t take long for Carter to make his decision as he received his Penn State offer less than two weeks ago, on June 16.

Carter is from Alcoa, Tennessee and attends Alcoa High School, and he led them to their first state championship in 56 years with a driving layup to win the game 59-58.

Special J to his teammates and coaches, Carter averaged 27.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game during his junior year.

He eclipsed the 2,000-point mark as a junior and became Alcoa’s all-time scorer with 2,102 points through three years.

His ability to score was on full display all season, including a single-game Alcoa scoring record of 62 points against Cumberland Gap.

Carter was able to grab a few awards along the way as well. He was a Class 2A Mr. Basketball Finalist, a Class 2A all-state selection and District 2-2A MVP.

He averaged 28 points per game during the state tournament and was named state tournament MVP for his performance.

His ability to score the ball at an efficient rate and his range beyond the arc are sure to translate to the next level.

Carter will benefit greatly from having a mentor like former Penn State captain Joe Crispin on the coaching staff.

Crispin could provide Carter with the extra knowledge needed to propel himself to the next level in his game.

Penn State fans should be excited to watch Carter’s senior year this upcoming season, and they should look forward to seeing what he has in store for his collegiate career.

Rhoades and his staff start their 2024 recruiting class strong and will look to keep making strides forward with the program.
