UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Battle of the Bands was hosted in Alumni Hall of the HUB, showcasing a number of Penn State student bands, on Tuesday night.

The event aims to spotlight the musical talent of these students by having them perform at Battle, and potentially, open for Movin’ On decided by the judges at the end of the performances.

“I feel like it’s important that we highlight this talent early on because, I don’t know, there’s not always opportunities like this in life,” Sofia Moussan, third-year majoring in public relations and executive director of Movin’ On said.

Forrester Grey, Mellow Honey, Alvarius, Sunday Antiques, Scotia and Queen of Peace were the line-up for this year’s Battle of the Bands, where they performed in 15 minute time slots.

“It’s rare that students get a chance to be the ones who are performing in the HUB and at Alumni Hall,” Moussan said.

Moussan has been a member of the team of students who put on Movin’ On for three years now, as she wanted to get experience in the music industry.

Beginning as a part of the promotional team her first year at Penn State, Moussan oversees the planning of the event in her current position.

“I think it’s really great that there’s so many kids already here,” Julia Graver, second-year majoring in mechanical engineering, said. “And a lot of them are coming together, expressing their musical talents and they just get to showcase this for a bunch of people for free.”

Hammocks and inflatable chairs were set up for attendees to lounge in, along with a game of mini golf and a merch table.

“One of my main takeaways from doing this is thinking about how it’s a show for the students put on by the students,” Moussan said.

Student coordinators and event staff are responsible for running the event. The only non-student involvement came from the judges.

After a night of energetic performances, the judges chose Mellow Honey to be the opener for Movin’ On this year.
