2022 Masters Recap
On Sunday, Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top player at 25 years old was able to miss four putts and still walked away with a comfortable win and his first-ever green jacket.
“I tried to keep my head down and just keep doing what I was doing because I didn’t want to break my concentration,” Scheffler said. “The minute I did was on 18 green when I finally got on there and I had a five-shot lead and was like, alright, now I can enjoy this. And you saw the results of that.”
Despite the strange finish, Scheffler has continued what some have coined the “Season of Scheffler.”
Scheffler has now won the Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by Mastercard, the WM Phoenix Open, the Dell Technologies World Golf Championships and the Masters. Scheffler holds seven top 10s and has only missed one cut in 13 starts this season.
Last year, Scheffler finished 22nd in the world with his best finishes coming in the form of a second-place finish in the World Golf Championships and a third-place finish in the Memorial Tournament.
To say Scheffler has taken a step forward this season would be an egregious understatement as he’s dominating the tour so far this season.
Scheffler was a member of one of ESPN Plus's featured groups on Thursday afternoon where Tiger Woods also played and drew a ton of attention in his return from his car accident. Woods's return dominated headlines Thursday when his performance had him in the top 10 going into Friday.
Come Friday, Woods didn’t perform his best and struggled for the remainder of the weekend finishing at 13 over par.
However, the story wasn’t about his performance, it was about the fact he even was on the course 14 months after a dangerous car crash that left him with career-threatening injuries.
Woods proved he is still the biggest draw in the sport, had a good time and gave the fans a show, and that’s what mattered. Woods will be back at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews in July.
One of the stories of Sunday though was the roaring comeback of Rory McIlroy. As McIlroy continued to chase the only missing major on his resume, he gave Scheffler reason to worry at points on Sunday, posting the round of the day with a 64.
McIlroy finished the tournament at seven under par and in the runner-up position, his career-best finish at the tournament, but after finishing oh-so-close, McIlroy turns his attention to the next tournament as he looks to continue riding his momentum.
The final headline from the weekend was the stars that missed the weekend. Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Jordan Speith all didn’t play with all three garnering a lot of attention heading into the weekend.
Instead, young stars like Scheffler and Cameron Smith dominated the weekend, giving golf fans a glimpse of other young stars who could look to capture headlines shortly.
